Back From the Dead
Colorado mother and baby die, but in a "Christmas miracle"
both are revived.
SUMMARY:  In what some have called a "Christmas miracle," a mom in
Colorado and her baby both died during her labor, but doctors at a Colorado
Springs hospital were able to revive them.   "There’s only one explanation for
having either one of them, let alone both of them here,” said Mike
Hermanstorfer, the husband and father. “It's just an absolute miracle."

On Christmas Eve Tracey Hermanstorfer's water broke, and they went to
Memorial Hospital for what they expected to be a routine delivery.  Instead,
the mother went into cardiac arrest.  A doctor verified that at one point she
had no signs of life: no heartbeat, was not breathing, and was as gray as her
sweatsuit.

The doctors then decided to do an emergency c-section, but when the baby
was delivered, he too wasn't breathing.  "Half of my family was laying there in
front of me, there's no other way to say it, but dead," said Mike.  But then
immediately after delivering, Tracey's pulse came back, and she was rushed
to the operating room to complete the surgery.

Meanwhile, the dead baby boy named Coltyn was handed to Mike.  While he
was still holding the lifeless body, doctors worked to get the baby breathing.
They were successful.  A very-much-alive Coltyn weighed in at 7 lbs. 4 oz.
and measured 19 inches in length.

Currently neither mom nor the baby show any signs of complications and are
at home.  The parents though will have to keep their eyes on Coltyn as he
grows up to see if he has suffered any long-term effects.  Despite running
multiple tests, the doctors don't have any idea why Tracey went into cardiac
arrest, but they say other pregnant women have been known to recover from
complications once their babies have been delivered.

COMMENT:  This story brings at least two thoughts into my mind.  First, it
shows us again that God can work through medical science.  Whether these
resuscitations were possible because of a direct act of God or were a
consequence of some natural developments, it still demonstrates that doctors
and medicine can be real blessings in our lives.  While there is no evidence in
the story that the Hermanstorfers were a religious couple (other than Mike's
reference to the recoveries being a miracle), we can hope and pray that if
they weren't faithful Christians before this drama played out, then perhaps
the Lord can use this incident to lead them to His Word and the knowledge of
eternal life.

Secondly, while the bringing back of two individuals from the dead may indeed
be miracles, the real "Christmas miracle" is what happened thousands of miles
away and thousands of years ago.  During the evening of the first Christmas,
God became man.  Isn't that a remarkable miracle?  A spirit became a physical
being.  The Mighty One became a lowly and humble human.  And He did it for
us.  Through faith in the truth that the Son of God came to earth to be born of
a woman and to become our Savior from sin, it isn't just a case of a few extra
years on earth, but now we can envision an eternity of happiness in heaven.
That is the best Christmas miracle there ever could be.
